Terms of Use
Last updated: October 14, 2026
By creating an account or using Portia, you accept these Terms of Use in full. If you do not agree, do not use the service.
1. Description of the service
Portia is a case- and file-management platform for lawyers and law firms, available at portia.mx. The service includes schedule management integrated with Google Calendar, monitoring of the judicial bulletin of the Judicial Council of the State of Jalisco, digital case files with document scanning, case notes, per-matter financial information, an app for the lawyer's clients, and an app for authorized collaborators.
Portia is operated by Francisco Javier Pérez Bouquet Lazcano, located in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico (the "Operator", "Portia", or "we").
2. Account types
Portia offers the following account types:
- Lawyer account — for legal professionals who manage their schedule, clients, and case files.
- Client account — for individuals who access the app linked to their lawyer to view hearings, receive case updates, and respond to document requests.
- Authorized-user account — for collaborators or paralegals to whom the lawyer grants scoped access to certain case files.
3. Registration and account
- Access to Portia requires a valid Google account.
- You are responsible for keeping your account secure and for all activity that occurs under it.
- You must provide truthful, up-to-date information when registering.
- Lawyers are responsible for complying with the rules governing legal practice in their jurisdiction, including professional secrecy and applicable ethical duties.
4. Acceptable use
By using Portia you agree to:
- Use the service only for lawful purposes and in accordance with these Terms.
- Not share your account with unauthorized third parties.
- Not attempt to access other users' data without authorization.
- Not use the service for illegal or fraudulent activities or in ways that harm third parties.
- Not reverse-engineer, decompile, or attempt to extract the platform's source code.
- Not intentionally overload the service's infrastructure or the public systems it queries (such as the judicial bulletin).
5. Membership, price and billing
- Lawyer membership: MXN $299 per month or MXN $2,990 per year (equivalent to 10 months: 2 free), VAT included, per lawyer account. It includes all of the lawyer's authorized collaborators and clients at no extra cost. Client and collaborator accounts do not pay.
- Free trial: every lawyer account gets a 30-day free trial. If you subscribe during the trial you don't lose the remaining days: the first charge happens when the trial ends.
- Billing: payment is automatic by card, every month or every year depending on the chosen plan, and renews for the same period until you cancel; processed by Stripe. Portia does not store card details. Stripe receipts are not Mexican tax invoices; if you need a CFDI, write to hola@portia.mx.
- Cancellation: you can cancel at any time from Settings → Membership. You keep full access until the end of the period already paid; partial periods are not refunded.
- Without an active membership (trial ended, cancellation, or a charge not covered after payment retries), the account becomes read-only: the lawyer keeps access to all their information (and may request its export), but cannot create or edit, automatic court-bulletin tracking is paused and their collaborators lose editing. Subscribing restores everything immediately. Your information is not deleted for non-payment.
- Any price change will be notified at least 30 days in advance and will not apply to a period already paid.
6. Data ownership
- Case files, notes, and documents entered by the lawyer are the exclusive property of the lawyer.
- Client data belongs to the lawyer who recorded it, under their professional responsibility.
- Portia does not sell, share, or use case-file data for any purpose other than operating the service.
- Upon account closure, the lawyer may request an export of their data at privacidad@portia.mx with 30 days' notice.
6 bis. Controller-Processor relationship (LFPDPPP)
In the processing of clients' personal data, the lawyer acts as the Data Controller
under the Federal Law on the Protection of Personal Data Held by Private Parties (LFPDPPP) effective
from March 21, 2025, and Portia acts as the Data Processor, processing such data
solely to provide the contracted service.
By using the Platform to manage client data, the lawyer:
- Confirms being the Controller of their clients' personal data under the LFPDPPP.
- Undertakes to have the corresponding privacy notice and to have made it available to their clients before entering their data into the Platform.
- For matters involving minors, confirms having the applicable legal basis and consents before recording their data.
- Accepts that Portia processes such data solely in accordance with the instructions implicit in the use of the service and with the Privacy Policy.
- Is responsible for complying with professional secrecy and any other regulations applicable to the practice of law in their jurisdiction.
Portia, as Processor, undertakes to: (i) process the data only for the purpose of the service;
(ii) implement reasonable technical and organizational security measures; (iii) not disclose the
data to third parties other than the sub-processors listed in the Privacy Policy; (iv) delete or
return the data upon termination of the contractual relationship, within the applicable periods.
6 ter. Authorized collaborators
The lawyer may grant collaborators or paralegals (authorized users) scoped access to specific case
files, setting the permission level per module. The lawyer is responsible for whom they grant
access to, the scope of that access, and the actions their authorized users take within the
Platform. Authorized users must use their access only for the legitimate purposes of the matter
and are equally bound by the duty of confidentiality. The lawyer may modify or revoke such access
at any time.
7. Google Calendar integration
Connecting Google Calendar is optional and requires the lawyer's express authorization. Access is used exclusively for the schedule features described in the Privacy Policy. The lawyer may revoke this access at any time from the platform or from their Google account.
7 bis. Judicial-bulletin monitoring
Judicial-bulletin monitoring relies on a third-party public system (the bulletin
of the Judicial Council of the State of Jalisco), whose availability, accuracy, and timeliness do
not depend on Portia. This feature is a support tool and does not
replace official review of the case file or the lawyer's professional judgment. Portia
does not guarantee that all published rulings will be detected or that the CJJ system will always
be available; the lawyer is responsible for verifying information directly with the authority when
needed.
8. Service availability
Portia strives to keep the service continuously available but does not guarantee uninterrupted availability. There may be periods of maintenance, updates, or outages beyond our control. We are not liable for losses arising from service interruptions.
9. Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law:
- Portia is not responsible for legal, procedural, or strategic decisions made by the lawyers who use the platform.
- Portia is a management tool and does not provide legal advice; it does not replace the lawyer's judgment or the official consultation of case files and the judicial bulletin.
- Portia's total liability for any claim will not exceed the amount paid by the user in the 12 months prior to the event giving rise to the claim, or MXN $500 for free accounts.
- Portia is not liable for indirect, incidental, special, or consequential damages.
10. Intellectual property
The name "Portia", the design, the code, and the platform's contents are the property of the Operator or its licensors. No license is granted over these elements beyond the use necessary to use the service in accordance with these Terms.
11. Suspension and termination
Portia may suspend or cancel an account if:
- These Terms of Use are violated.
- Fraudulent use or illegal activity is detected.
- Payment for the contracted plan is not made (where applicable).
Users may cancel their account at any time by writing to hola@portia.mx.
12. Changes to the Terms
Portia may modify these Terms at any time. Substantial changes will be notified at least 30 days in advance by email or via notice within the platform. Continued use of the service after the effective date constitutes acceptance of the new Terms.
13. Governing law and jurisdiction
These Terms are governed by the laws of the United Mexican States. For any dispute arising from the use of Portia, the parties submit to the jurisdiction of the competent courts of the city of Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, waiving any other jurisdiction that may correspond to them.
